We’d like to take a moment to introduce you to our exclusive hemp farm, nestled at 8100′ elevation in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains.
Melange Farms, the dedicated grower for Fountain of Health, is located on historical land in Shawnee, Colorado. Our acreage sits at the base of beautiful Shawnee mountain, known as Ute Mountain by the Native American peoples. This particular settlement of land began in the 1800’s as Slots Ranch.
The Slots headed for these hills during the gold rush, opting to serve the gold rush population instead of participating directly in mining the gold. The property ended up with narrow gauge rail that came up from Denver. The Slots would harvest ice from Lake Shawnee, which is our immediate source of water for the farm. In this era before refrigeration, they would then send the ice back down for all of the ice houses in Denver. The noise from the narrow rail drove Mr. Slot out of the area. He headed back to southern California for the quiet – if it could indeed be found there.
With the settlement dating back so far in Colorado’s history – since civil war years – we have senior water rights from 1864. We access the water from Lake Shawnee, fed by the Platte River, which is fed by Lake Dillon and Mt. Evans water shed or snow melt. So, all of our water is fresh snow melt. It’s the thing great beer commercials are made of: touting pure, Rocky Mountain spring water. It’s the same pure trickle that sustains our hemp, the clean source of the Fountain of Health extracts.
Even better, the property has always been utilized for livestock, cattle and equine, with a very short stint into a hay crop. The span of the centuries has made the soil very fertile and rich, especially compared to other soil in Colorado. It’s beautiful. It’s alive. It looks like chocolate cake when it’s wet. It’s wonderful, ancient soil. Keeping this soil nutritious, happy, and teeming with life is the core of our farming principles. We’ll definitely be writing more about that, so stay tuned!
